Portugal-Spain 10/1

Day-1. DEPARTURE CITY – LISBON: Flight to Portugal.

Day-2. LISBON – BRAGA: Arrive in Lisbon and board your bus for a ride to Braga. Upon arrival transfer to your centrally located hotel. After checking in join your tour director on a guided tour of Portugal’s second largest city. Visit / see: the Igreja de Sao Francisco, Santa Clara, Sao Bento Station with beautiful tilled walls, and the Medieval Quarter. After dinner join your tour director on a walking tour to Batalha Square and to Passeio Alegre Garden.

Day-3. BRAGA – VILLA REAL – LEIRIA: Go for a full day excursion to visit two of the“Wonders of Portugal”. First visit Braga, also known as Bracara Augusta, established by Roman Emperor Caracala. Visit the Cathedral, the oldest in Portugal (built in 11th century),Rocaile Palace, and the old part of town mostly built in Medieval times. In the afternoon continue to Vila Real, the capital of Tras-os-Montes. The city is known for its attractive residences rising above the surrounding countryside that were built around 18th century by noble families. Walk along Avenida Carvalho Araujo and Avenida Marginal to Jardim da Carriera. Continue south to reach Leiria for the overnight.

Day-4. BATALHA – FATIMA OBIDOS: Travel to the famous Batalha Monastery built by King João I thanking Virgin Mary for the Portuguese victory at the battle of Aljubarrota. This impressive place is a a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After visiting the Monastery, travel to Fatima, a famous Catholic pilgrimage site and one of the most visited shrines in the world. Visit the Sanctuary of Fatima where the tombstones of the three visionaries lie and the Chapel of Apparitions. Continue to Lisbon for overnight.

Day-5. LISBON: Go on a guide tour of Lisbon and see another two “Wonders” of Portugal”. First explore theTower of Belem, the symbol of Lisbon, located on the former beach of Restelo. Then travel to Praca do Imperio to visit famous Jeronimo’s Monastery containing the tombs of Vasco da Gama. King Manuel transformed it into this remarkable monument, a prayer to the Virgin of Belém for the success of Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. Then drive past the Bull Ring to the Pombal Statue and along the grand Avenida da Liberdade. Later visit Alfama district and Castelo de Sao Jorge. Free afternoon.

Day-6. SINTRA – CASCAIS: Go on a full day guided excursion to Sintra and Cascaic. Sintra and Cascais were built as Summer resorts for royal and aristocratic families of Europe. In Sintra visit the magnificent Paco Real palace, Palacio da Vila, Church of Sao Martinho, Church of Misericordia, Hanging Post and the Clock Tower. Continue to Cacais on the Atlantic coast. Spend some time in the town and return to Lisbon.

Day-7. LISBON – MADRID: Take a short flight from Lisbon to Madrid. After arrival join your tour director on a walking tour to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Major. Some free time to explore on your own.

Day-8. MADRID: Start with a guided city tour. See/Visit: Retiro Park, Puerta del Sol,Gateway to the Sun, kilometer zero from which all the country’s road distances are measured, the Opera, and the beautiful parks and plazas. Continue on to Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa, Basilica de San Miguel, Capilla del Obispo, Palacio Real, and Palacio de Congresos. Then visit the famous Prado Museum, a Neo-Gothic building from the 18th century housing masterpieces by Velasquez, Goya, Murillo, and Ribera as well as Flemish and Italian works.

Day-9.MADRID -TOLEDO – MADRID: Morning tour to Toledo. The city is surrounded by medieval walls and is famous for its fine Damascus tempered steel and sword production. El Greco, a famous painter lived there. Visit El Greco House and the Cathedral with many El Greco paintings. See the main sites such as Alcazar, Synagog de Santa Maria la Blanca, Puente del Alcantar and the magic view of the walled city from the other bank of the river Tagus. Return to Madrid.

Day-10. DEPARTURE: Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
